Van Vietnamese Restaurant, Darra, Brisbane

I know what you’re thinking… what the h#ll was I doing in Darra? It’s AGES away!!! I’ll go anywhere for good pho. Turns out Darra has quite the Vietnamese population…so what do you think that means? Excellent Vietnamese food!!

The larger version of the truth is that two of my friends used to go here many moons ago. They knew it was great and they wanted to share that with me. At first I wasn’t sure if I was so lucky, it really doesn’t look that appealing on first view… another reminder never judge a book by its cover.

Let me tell you, Van Vietnamese Restaurant is nothing from the outside. Annnd it’s nothing from the inside either! There’s plain tables and everything you need but nothing more. Not even those ceramic spoons** you usually have at Vietnamese restaurants for the soups. Nope, here you make do with normal spoons. The sauce even still had the market price on it. If you read into that that the food might be cheap, you’d be correct.

Where am I going with all this you ask? Well, the pho was damnnnn good!! In fact, some of the best I have had around Brisbane… if not the best. There was a generous helping of all the usual extras, the broth was freaking delicious, good quality meat and the noodles were a good texture.

Extra chilli and no aircon had my face shining with sweat but it’s worth it. I ate so much that I could have rolled home and I wasn’t upset about it!

Thanks Ben & Tom, I loved it and the company was excellent too.

Ps. Sorry about your shirt Ben (it had a light splashing of chilli broth) but I’m excited to see your new one!!

** UPDATE from Van Vietnamese Restaurant when I sent them this review: ‘Thank, Rachael. We glad that you enjoy our food. Also you can ask for one ceramic spoon from staff, we usually don’t give out to people since most people don’t want it. So next time feel free to ask we always have them to customer that need it.’ So there you go, ask and you shall receive!
