Must Do NZ: Poppies Winery Martinborough

I first visited Poppies Winery in Martinborough a few years back when I wrote this blog about best NZ days trips. I did a bike tour along the wineries and this was one of my favourite spots.

Back in the area again and looking for somewhere to spend a long leisurely lunch, we booked in to Poppies. It’s a gorgeous spot, especially in autumn when the vineyard has gorgeous colours of rust and golds highlighted by the sun shining through.

We sat inside as we had Brooks with us. Brooks is 6 months old and I thought it was only apt I take him for his first winery visit!

They were out of rosè which was devastating for Kim – she was so looking forward to it but with so many other great wines it was a catastrophe. We ordered the share platter, it’s full of delicious items and great value. There’s cheese, salmon, quiche, dips, olives, steak – a beautiful selection of premium tastes. We paired ours with Poppies dry Riesling upon consultation with our waiter (who was wonderful and I can’t remember his name) who also let us know that if we didn’t finish the bottle it could be corked to take home – perfect.

Oh I forgot, we also ordered the truffle cheese afterwards, because well, truffle cheese. It was delicious! If you go, get it. You know you want to. It’s worth it.

I did the tasting and not surprisingly, the Pinot Noir was my favourite. The region is known for this variety and this one definitely stands to test that.

If you’re perusing Martinborough and surrounds I highly recommend a visit here for a leisurely long lunch and wine tasting.
