I found Hosokawa on Zomato by fluke. It was listed on a trending list for Brisbane so thought we would give it a shot. Thank goodness we did, that kind of secret should be shared far and wide!
Hidden in a bunch of shops on Racecourse Road, Hosokawa is an unassuming but busy restaurant. There was a brief wait for a table, always a good sign. In saying that, there are only about a dozen or so tables, I would look to book next time.
We ordered a bunch of sushi to share and some sides. First to the table was the sashimi. The serving was generous, the fish thick cut and incredibly fresh. Melt in your mouth goodness! We later found inside a sushi bar where you can watch their sushi ninja prepare your tasty feast.
Next on our plates, the ikayaki, char grilled squid. Oh my life! I had been waiting to try this since the moment it appeared on my Zomato feed and it did not disappoint! Fresh, cooked to perfection and with a beautiful teriyaki sauce. My fave dish… maybe. Hard to choose!
We tried the grilled eggplant with miso sauce, it was tender and flavorsome. The grilled eel, unagi kabayaki, was mouth-wateringly good too. I did find it got a bit much, as while it tasted great, there was a lot of fat on the cut. More of a personal preference of course. A smaller plate would have worked better for me.
There was way more sushi than we had counted on (we had the California roll) and we struggled to get it all down, that rarely happens! It was also generously proportioned, fresh and delicious.
Definitely worth putting some time aside to visit Hosokawa.
Oh, and get this, there’s a ice cream place next door! Can pop over there for dessert after a beautiful meal.
