I crave ramen alllll the time. I’m always so excited to find a place and order it and I am so often let down by it. There’s a very strong chance that if the restaurant doesn’t specialise in ramen it won’t be good.
We arrived at Hakata Gensuke Ramen to find a 20min wait. That was about 19 minutes too long (as nice as it may be) so we took a risk and found Shujinko across the road on Russell Street in Melbourne CBD and waited five minutes for a table.
Inside the decor was very Japanese and bustled just like a restaurant in Japan too. It’s cozy with Japanese pop culture figurines and Sake bottles all around the kitchen and walls. The first page of the menu displayed all the ramen choices with a just few other plates to compliment or for those really weird people that don’t like ramen.
I ordered the spicy ramen, Jake & Nikita ordered the original ramen and Lisa got the black ramen. Soooo freaking delicious. It had all the right elements, in all the right quantities. Some bok choy, some spring onions, some bean sprouts, some noodles, half a marinated egg and char grilled pork belly. Just the right amount of spice and that beautiful pork broth that makes you fall in love with ramen.
All four of us loved our lunch. Nikita and Jake weren’t long back from Tokyo and they thought it was just as good as the original goods over there!
Teamed with a Kirin and some edamame, great company and fun atmosphere, it was brilliant.
And I just found out it is open 24 hours! How good!
Where do you get your ramen?
