The New Black, Brisbane’s New Breakfast Must-Try

I always know I have found an excellent new spot when I have issues deciding on which dish to try. I had to ask Jess, at The New Black in Fortitude Valley to help me out. Three dishes, all tied. The chilli scramble, the roast pumpkin tacos and the ‘big breakfast’ were all high contenders. Jess took me through each one and I eventually decided on the tacos. Luckily for me, my friend was kind enough to choose the chilli scramble so I could give that a try too. That’s a good friend right there.

Anyway, I was keen to kick my day off with a juice (I like to think it leads me towards making healthier choices the rest of the day) and I was happy to find a number of them on the menu. Beet chia was my choice (apple, beetroot, lemon, ginger, mint and chia seeds) and a good one at that!

So, the food. Ahhh the food. I started off with my roast pumpkin tacos, (spiced pumpkin, sprouted lentils, tahini yoghurt, fermented chilli sauce & pomegranate on blue corn tortilla) a very unassuming dish. It was spicy but perfectly balanced with the yoghurt. The pumpkin was slightly charred and the many flavours worked together to create a delicious mouthful with each bite.

Then I stole my friend’s plate. The chilli scramble (folded eggs, fermented chilli, fried sobrassada chorizo, green romesco on rye) was quite different to what I thought it might be. They weren’t spicy hot, it was the chilli flavour that really came through. Amazing flavour, different with each combination of ingredients you put on your fork.

The New Black Chef is definitely talented at balancing the flavours in these dishes. They have bought together a unique breakfast menu with experimental dishes that taste like they were meant to be together and leave you questioning how you never thought of trying them before.

I am looking forward to the ‘big breakfast’ one day soon which is nothing like a traditional big breakfast but instead features a slow egg, avocado cream, tomato chips and mushroom foam – I’m very curious!!
