Water St Kitchen was recommended to me (thanks Jo!) to check out in Bundaberg. I stalked their Instagram page and fell down a rabbit hole, admiring their beautifully presented and paired plates!
I visited for breakfast and couldn’t decide between the spanner crab on avocado and rye with a cucumber salad or the croquettes with poached eggs. The croquettes won out but luckily my colleague ordered the spanner crab so I got to try both! Win-win.
First of all, absolute props to whomever designed how the dishes are plated. They look phenomenal, definitely insta-worthy! Both of our dishes came out and just looked stunning. The also looked completely empty when we were both done – nothing left on the plate! Says a lot for the taste too.
Anyway, onto the food. The croquettes were delightfully soft and creamy inside. Smooth in flavour (herb & mustard) and texture, crunchy on the outside and perfect with the de paoli tomato & bacon ragu, poached eggs & aged parmesan sauce. I savoured every last bite.
The spanner crab was a beautifully refreshing dish. Light and bright. The crab was fresh, the avocado smooth and the rye providing that extra crunch factor for variety. Yum! And the cucumber salad, just in case it wasn’t fresh enough!
The venue is a beautiful character house, beautifully decorated. I can imagine it would be stunning in the evening and I hear they do a fab long lunch. We sat outside to enjoy the morning sunshine.
Definitely recommend a visit! I’ll be back for a long lunch for sure.
