Milford Sound Lodge is the ultimate in a luxe, but eco-friendly way for getting close to nature on your Milford Sound Trip!
I couldn’t recommend a visit to this incredible lodge enough. Why? Let me break it down…
Location | Unparalleled views. The lodge is literally set into one of the most picturesque and wild areas of the world. It looks almost like you’ve walked onto a movie set. The mountain view chalet rooms open up to a dramatic cliff, covered in lush greenery, separated only by a classically beautiful and rugged river, often with mist or low clouds settled across it. You can sit outside on your deck, at the picnic table, or simply look outside from the warmth of your chalet.
Location 2.0 | The Lodge is also a really convenient spot to stop for a night if you’re doing a cruise or exploring the Milford Sound / Fiordland area.
Nature | Milford Sound Lodge is right in the thick of nature. There’s nothing neighboring the lodge, so not only are the views gorgeous but the wildlife are aplenty! We had friendly Wekas trying to join us for happy hour in our rooms, and a Kea stopped by for a peek at us too. These birds are so prehistoric-looking, it’s like going back in time. They’re super friendly, and humans walking around their digs doesn’t seem to upset them in the least, in fact, they’re rather curious.
Chalets | Beautiful rooms, with (this is the kicker) underfloor heating! Doesn’t sound that exciting? Well, wait until you can’t feel your feet when you arrive because it’s so cold outside and you walked in the snow…
The views are phenomenal and the designer has used this to their advantage with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. They’ve let the views be the stand-out feature, with minimalist and neutral decor. Eco-friendly efforts are obvious throughout the design and incorporated elements. There’s a fab selection of Kiwi wine and snacks to choose from in the rooms, should you feel peckish. And there’s a super hot shower with great pressure! Perfect.
Dining | We visited the Pio Pio Restaurant nestled onsite and devoured their three-course set menu for $75 per head. There’s a great selection of NZ fare, and the team put together a lovely surprise for my Brother’s birthday.
Breakfast | Delivered to your room in the morning is a delicious breakfast. When you arrive, you email through your menu choice to reception. I had a toasted ham and cheese croissant with a fresh orange juice. Great start to the day!
Service | Not sure why I put this last, as it competes pretty close to the top spot on my list of values for accommodation. Rachel checked me in and was wonderful, warm, and inviting. She locked in a dining reservation for us and explained the lay of the land. Very easy check-in and check-out.
If there are rooms available (or Campervan sites) left at Milford Sound Lodge, lock them in before they’re gone! A fantastic experience in some of New Zealand’s most pristine and untouched wilderness.
