NYC, Day 5

Our last day in New York. Cue the sad violins.

Up and Adam, laundry on and walking around the city. Funny thing is, nothing opens until 9… What!!

Met John for the last time (cue sad violins again) and had a wonderful brunch at The Harold on 32nd and 6th. I loved my lobster eggs benedict but the girls didn’t like the taste or colour of the eggs. They have a yellow yolk over here.

We parted ways and took the subway to 5th Ave for a spot of high street shopping. I finally bought some sunnies from Michael Kors which I love. And seeing the horrible conversion rate from AUD to USD, I should too!!

We had a car pick us up and take us to JFK airport for our flight to Vegas. The queues were far too long for our liking. A good 40mins circling those little shitty ropes they put up.

We all slept most of the way, checked in to our hotel (a great deal – the Westin just off the strip through a mystery HotWire deal) and cabbed to a Chinese restaurant in Gold Coast.

We had a delicious meal full of veggies, just what we were craving. And dumplings. Always with the dumplings!

We wandered around the strip but there weren’t many young people around, mainly crowds of families and couples. Eventually we found a bar in Caesar’s and had a drink before going to bed.

Oh! And holy moly it was nice to have a plush as hell bed with aircon, a lush duvet and fluffy pillow! And the black out curtains. Oh my life. Slept so well!!

NYC, Day 4

Since we had a late night, we slept in again – our body clocks are absolutely whack!

I got up first and went for lunch wth John at the Brooklyn Diner in Times Square then met Lauren for some shopping at Macy’s. After many deliberations I finally bought my watch – went with a Marc Jacobs leather strap one. I love it.

Nikita emerged about 4pm, we met her and took the subway to Brooklyn Bridge. We walked over the bridge and all the way into Brooklyn then grabbed a subway deeper in, to where a map said was the ‘restaurant area’ I think what it may have accurately been labelled as is ‘nearly the hood, state housing, make you feel a little nervous area.’

We hopped back on the subway and over to Manhattan to Little Italy. The restaurant we chose was far from good. Shit, slow service. Average food and an annoying 8 year old waiter. He was cute to start then bloody irritating when he kept trying to take our plates and talk to us. Let’s just say, he didn’t get a tip! Don’t visit Lunella, always check the reviews. It’s worth finding wifi to do so – we spent USD$150 on a poor meal & service.

We Ubered home and were exhausted. We all fell into a deep sleep knowing we only had one day left in this awesome city.

NYC, Day 3

Our first proper day in New York! One where we weren’t exceptionally hungover or tired.

First up, NYC high line. Really cool old railway over pass that they’ve turned into a walk with a beautiful garden and cityscape views and rad art installations. Highly recommend it.

We dropped down at Chelsea markets, another really cool place that I hadn’t been to in my precious trips and love! Wicked markets and incredible food. I had a tasting of pasta and it was quite possibly the best I have ever had!

Lunch was a lobster roll. Yep, a delicious lobster roll! It was succulent and fresh. We got it from a fresh seafood market where there was delicious, quality seafood everywhere you looked, my mouth was watering. Definitely eat there if you’re in Chelsea.

Over to Central Park for a quick lie down in the grass and to take in the sights. We wandered over to the lake and had a (very strong – I love free pour) cocktail at the Boathouse.

A quick pit stop for shopping and a snack from Whole Foods (best grocery store ever) and we were on our way home.

We met John on the rooftop of his apartment for a drink. The view up there is ridiculous! I have stayed here four times but never been up there. Crazy. We shared a beer with John, taking in the views and he told us to dress up. He had got us in to his fave restaurant and it was somewhere really nice – but a secret.

He went to the Australian to have some drink while we got ready.

We met him down there, dressed up and I was reintroduced to the barman there, Al. We all ended up having shots and 3 last drinks.

John, Lauren, Nikita and I headed over in a cab and pulled up in front of Beauty and Essex, at which point Lauren got super excited as she knew of its reputation.

Behind a pawn shop is a secret door and an amazing bar and restaurant. We started with cocktails and John said that Al was coming to join us too.

We had so much fun drinking and eating. The food was magnificent – absolutely amazing. We got Lauren a cupcake with a candle and sung happy birthday to her rather loudly after many cocktails.

Al took us around the corner to a prohibition bar called Pianos that was down a secret pathway which looked abandoned. Inside was in full swing, full of people. Drink were either served in paper bags or in teacups and there was a piano and great old music. We danced and had a ball!

Big thanks to John for an incredible night and letting us stay in his apartment!!!!!! I always have a brilliant time with him.

NYC, Day One

Day one was rather uneventful really.

We arrived at 11pm the night before after travelling for 28 hours so logically, we dropped out bags, got dressed and hit the club.

We ended up at 1Oak, which we later found out is one of the most exclusive clubs in New York. It was really quiet until about 3am when it got packed out! Really intimate club with great rnb music. A pit stop at Bryant Deli at 6.30am, a drunken call to my parents and I was out.

We slept until 10.30 then went for a wander around Times Square and a few shops before all three of us hit a wall. Back home for a nap from 3-6.

We made it back out for dinner at an awesome Japanese restaurant, did some shopping and grabbed some beers on the way home so we could have a pre-town bevvie.

Fast forward and we are at the PHd (Pent House Dreams Hotel) rooftop club in Chelsea. Little did we know it is one of the other most exclusive clubs in NYC. There was a $300minimum bar spend to get in and then you are escorted to the elevator where you are taken up to… I actually have no idea what level but it was really high!!

The club was super packed but nice outside on the balcony so we mainly spent time out there. We met a bunch of hilarious local guys, who told us that our weekend had been their ‘dream weekend’ – seems we are doing okay with the whole NYC nightlife thing.

Hours later we arrived home, after checking out a famous pizza joint and playing basketball at one of the guy’s apartments. Good times!

I love New York.

USA & Mexico 2015

Yeap – finally booked my next trip!

This has got to be the longest I have gone in years without a trip overseas (NZ & Oz don’t count as overseas) so I am super excited to have my next two week jaunt booked in!

The rough itinerary is:

7-12 August: NYC
12-15 August: Las Vegas (read pool parties)
15-22 August: Mexico

So two old favourites plus somewhere new with Mexico! I have never visited NYC or Vegas in the summer, only in cooler months – super excited for rooftop bars and pool parties.

We are looking at flying into Guadalajara then busing to Puerto Vallarta. We have a week total in Mexico – any recommendations are welcome! Flights are reasonable to Cancun and Guadalajara but Oaxaca is quite expensive.
