After seeing the baked eggs on the tables we had no choice but to all order them at Fat Hen! They looked so good. I ordered the ham and smoked mozzarella (in carrazza) dish while Suzie and Krishna tried the tomato and basil (in camicia) dish.
Krishna and I split our plates so we could try both – they were delicious. The eggs weren’t over cooked (they often are in this style) and the loaf to complement to plate worked well. If I could choose just one it would be the in camicia.
They had other yummy menu items too – I nearly went with the breakfast mozzarella.
Be prepared to wait though. Ours was only 20mins but others after us was much longer and there is nothing around. Hot spot!
I’m not sure if I’ve ever been so awed by glass in my life. I know I didn’t have high expectations. I’ve seen glass blowing in Venice, seen many glass art-works but never anything on such a scale.
It was just stunning. Breathtaking. Overwhelming.
Each room that reveals the next piece is even more incredible than the last.
My favourites have to be the main room and the room with the glass in the ceiling. They’re just amazing. So much effort, design and detail in the pieces and they’re huge!
Outside is great too. Chihuly has effortlessly integrated the glass into the garden and it really does look like the pieces belong there. On my crappy iPhone camera I wasn’t able to take pictures that really capture the concept.
We stayed and watched a few of the videos about Chihuly – behind the scenes and so forth. He has Such a vision without having a vision at all. He doesn’t know what he is going to create until he starts painting it.
I love the way he paints – unsure of the medium? A watered down acrylic perhaps. He literally paints from the tube. Squeezes sloshes of paint out onto giant cardboard in crazy motions and somehow it looks incredible and you can see what they are going to do with the glass. Cool to see the process from concept to final pieces.
I honestly thought the guy must be dead – his art is so recognised I just presumed but he is alive and kicking, creating new masterpieces.
If you are in Seattle, I HIGHLY recommend checking it out. It’s right next to the Space Needle in Seattle Center.
I had crazy dreams. Woke up groggy. I hate spiders. There was a fricken gigantic spider on my hand in my dream. Yuck!!
Anyway we headed to Northgate Mall to look for some boots for the girls. I ended up with 2 pairs of boots too. Oops!!! BUT I do need them for winter here. Totally justifiable. 4 days, 4 pairs of shoes. That’s a good holiday.
Next up? We tried to find a store but ended up lost. Found a cute seaside town though so had a pic there, gave up on the store and went in search of Walmart. Which we actually did find! Yay!
I bought some confectionary for my twitter pal @smayjay and a fish tank for me. I’m pretty damn excited about my fish tank!! I haven’t had one for three months. That is three months too long.
Now we are almost back at the border where we will get grilled about what we did and how much shopping was done. Swear I only spent $200 officer. Please don’t tax my items!
Turns out the border guy had a big Samoan tattoo on his arm so I was able to charm him and he let us through no sweat!
We didn’t leave the hotel until 11am after our disastrous night out. I wanted a bagel so starbucks was first up. Then we went straight to the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition at the Seattle Center. It was so incredible and I took a ridiculous amount of photos so it’s going to have its own post! If you get the chance, go. I loved it.
We had heard the Freemont Markets were worth a look so we made out way out there. What a gorgeous little place. If I lived in Seattle I would frequent there and Kirkland regularly.
Freemont markets are just your usual community markets full of crap as treasure. Turned out Macklemore’s Thrift Shop song was filmed there. Best part for me though was the food! Who’s surprised?!
I had a soft, plump, fresh naan with chicken tikka and man it was good!! Only$7 too! I’d def get it again. I followed it up with a chocolate cherry gluten free cookie – melted in my mouth and gave me a sugar high. After seeing me enjoy it so much the girls all went and got one too! I’m a good little influencer.
Now when one has time to kill, what should one do? To the pub! An Australian & Kiwi pub nonetheless! We headed to the Kangaroo and Kiwi pub in Ballard. Tahlia had friends who worked there and we ran into the owner on the walk there. We played UNO and drank cider in the sun.
We had a 7pm booking for the Seattle Space Needle – basically just a lookout on the 52nd floor. We got a combo deal for $27 for both the needle and the glass museum. Lookout was pretty cool – just another city, another view though really. Guess I’ve seen a few now!
We enjoyed a beverage on the deck watching the sunset then headed back down and over to Kirkland. Except we never made it there. We got lost. Surprise!
But that’s when we found the Cheesecake Factory so happy days! I wrote a separate blog about dinner too, I love that place! Great food, venue and service at a low price. Perfect.
Last night at the hotel before checking out. Early night in. Couldn’t wait to wash my hair!
Convinced the girls to head to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner as none of them had actually eaten there before! Disgraceful!
I love the Cheesecake Factory! I was in need of something fresh and rather plain and with its massive selection and pretty surroundings it hit the spot!
Went with two small plates as I like a variety.
– Tuna Tatare – amazing. Raw tuna with avo, a sesame soy dressing and wonton crisps. Just what I wanted!
– Beet & goat cheese salad – pecans with rocket (arugula is what they call it here) with beets, apple and feta mmmm.
Perfect serving sizes and a lovely evening with the girls. A pleasure as always!
Waking up early I planned on fruit for breakfast but that went out the window as soon as I saw the waffles!
Straight to Pike Market or Public Markets – I was amazed at how great they were! The atmosphere at the seafood stand is awesome. They all shout and chant but the coolest thing is when they throw the fish! Our friend Jay even got to catch one.
There’s food galore, gifts, knick knacks and gorgeous bunches of flowers for $5 – $10! The seafood is incredible. MASSIVE scallops, sooo much salmon and juicy prawns, mussels yummm my mouth is watering. I could have just watched for hours.
You can find the original Starbucks there too, you’ll also find a HUGE line out the front of it. You’d never know it was the same as every other Starbucks.
We did the underground Seattle tour ($17) which while was quite interesting, wasn’t as good as I expected. By the end of it I was incredibly hungry. Nothing new, I know.
We went to the waterfront for lunch. I devoured half a dozen oysters but they were tiny – like barely a taste and they’re gone. Shame at $13 – I guess we are spoilt in NZ.
My pier smoked salmon was yum though and the warm bread melted in my mouth.
Shopping was up next! Three of us ended up having our makeup done at MAC. At only $50 redeemable on makeup it was worth it as I spent about double that so having my face done was a bonus really. Picked up my fave Chanel mascara and I was good to go!
We couldn’t find the girls at the car so we did the only logical thing we could really and grabbed a bevy across the road at the pub so we could monitor their return. Phones are on roaming in USA unfortunately.
I picked up a 6 pack of cider and we all spent far too long getting ready to go out. I nearly fell asleep. I devoured some good Chinese in the process though.
In the end Tahlia drove, as there were no cabs and she’d hardly been drinking. We got lost going there then couldn’t find the Capitol Hill area where are the nightlife was supposed to be. Finally found it, parked, then couldn’t get in anywhere. Turns out we needed our passports – which I should have known.
We headed home (after getting lost trying to get out) only to find the maccas was shut. Noooo! Denny’s was our only other option. We would have waited there about 40mins for takeaway. It was terrible service and disgusting food.
Even though we never made it out we weren’t in bed until 3am. Eventful day.
