Malacca Restaurant, Disappointing Laksa In Brisbane CBD

After visiting Malaysia a few weeks ago, I suddenly had a craving for a good laksa. That delicious, rich, curry, coconut, spicy broth. Lots of noodles and generous vegetables and chicken or seafood… drool!

I was in the city and Malacca Restaurant came up multiple times with high reviews and comments like ‘best laksa in Brisbane!’ So I hit the pavement, excited to try this raved-about laksa. I only just noticed the Zomato review wasn’t great- should have known to check there.

The restaurant itself was very unassuming. A little sign outside and a fairly plain interior, nothing surprising. I ordered my laksa, the signature with chicken and waited impatiently.

The laksa arrived fairly quickly, a generous serving and looked delicious. Then came the sense of utter disappointment after the first mouthful. It was bland. It had a dull taste of laksa but lacked that richness and intensity you usually find in a good bowl.

I ate a little so I was no longer hungry and left the rest. Slightly flavoured noodles and a bit of chicken really doesn’t do it for me. The best part was the eggplant.

Anyone know where I can find amazing laksa in Brisbane?!

Ramen Champion, Sunnybank Brisbane

If you’ve been before, you will know that it is seriously difficult to choose where to eat in Sunnybank! You’re surrounded by delicious, authentic asian restaurants at very reasonable and competitive prices.

My friend and I felt like ramen (when don’t I? Let’s be honest) and went in search of some. Ramen Champion was lit right up so in we went!

A fairly classic fit out as far as ramen restaurants go, although a little more modern, clean and spacious than the ones that try to imitate the unique spaces that are authentic or in Japan. I ordered the black champion ramen with vegetables, flame grilled pork and garlic sauce. My friend ordered the Veggie Champion. Luckily, Ramen Champion’s vegetarian bowl actually has vegetarian stock (we were both expecting it to be a pork base) which made my friend very happy.

The bowl was delicious but not the best I have had. I wouldn’t go back there on my next visit to Sunnybank (because there are a hundred different delicious choices like dumplings etc) and if I was craving ramen, Taro’s in Brisbane city or Ramen Dando in Gold Coast would be my go-to’s.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with this place, I would just prefer to eat better food in Sunnybank and better ramen somewhere else.

Best Pre-Theatre Dining In Brisbane? Bacchus South Bank

Bacchus was the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility. It’s a fitting name for this Brisbane restaurant, let me tell you why…

I was lucky to snatch tickets to opening night of Aladdin and wanted to show my friend, Benny some of the beautiful food Brisbane has to offer.

Enter the Bacchus pre-theatre menu. Limited choice (seriously, if you need me at the theatre by 7.30pm, I CANNOT have the full range of options!), and still I had issues deciding which to go for. Bacchus is in South Bank too, right across from QPAC thankfully, otherwise we would probably have been late.

Of course I went right into questioning Andrew, the phenomenal Bacchus Sommelier about his wine list. Andrew said that while there were LOTS of suggestions for what to put on the extensive list, he listened to no one. He created the list himself five years ago and nobody else has touched it since. I could happily waste a month of Sundays coming to visit just to taste the wines!

It was a hot day so we thought we would start with a white wine. Andrew picked the Woodlands chardonnay. I am one of those weird people that enjoys very oaked and smoky wines and this one matched my tastes.

The warm bread arrived, made in house. Superb.

The amuse-bouche followed. A spinach and tapioca-chip ricotta with blue tea foam – the sweet baby blue is naturally coloured. Next to that was the deep-fried pecorino croquette with mortadella mousse – delicious and full of flavour. The oysters were quite a surprise, filled with an oyster sponge, carrot and ginger puree and puffed quinoa. They were light and filled with flavour. What a way to set the stage for a meal!

For our entrees, we shared the beef tartare and the squid ink and kingfish gnocchi. The beef tartare (O’Connor eye fillet), with hand cut mustard seeds, crostini and topped with a quail egg was just a taste of the quality of what we were in for next.

The winning dish for me was the squid ink and kingfish gnocchi. First of all, it looks gorgeous. Stark black poufs on the plate with vibrant orange dollops and green dressing. When I learnt how it was created, I was even more impressed. There is no flour and no potato in the gnocchi. And that gorgeous dollop of sauce is tomato purée, sitting on cannellini puree and sprinkled with tomato dust. Mussels and Stradbroke Island cuttlefish give the dish some more texture, a bit of crunch. The tomato puree is a perfect twist, a pop of acidic flavour. Nicely done Chef Speroni.

When I praised the entrees, the waitress probably summed it up best when she said, ‘the tasting menu is the best, they don’t want to offer any half way dishes.’

Cue the apple and rosemary granita for a palette cleanser.

While I have dined at Bacchus Brisbane a number of times (it’s a favourite), it was my friend’s first visit to the restaurant. He reminded me just how spectacular the design is. Stunning rich brown leathers and mahogany wood with warm lighting makes for quite an opulent feel. It oozes quality. You quickly realise the staff and the food are of that exceptional quality too, you know you are being well taken care of and in great hands.

We went with white wines to match our mains, the kingfish and the herb risotto. A Murdoch Hill chardonnay and a Dog Point Marlborough – perfectly matched by Andrew.

The herb risotto with fennel, chevre and blood orange dust was delicious. It’s one of those comforting meals you have to purposefully consider making each mouthful last longer.

The corn really bought the kingfish dish together, with the textures changing each bite of the succulent fish. Marinated corn, dehydrated corn, popcorn – all subtle taste changes and textures for each mouthful.

Had I have had the time I would have also chosen a dessert but Aladdin was calling. Or rather, Genie was getting ready to hypnotise the crowd with his captivating eyebrows.

With the pre-theatre menu you can choose an entrée or a dessert and a main with a wine. Phenomenal value at $69 and the quality and taste is up with the very best to try in Brisbane. They have packages for overnight stays too – I wish I had considered that earlier.

While we were dining I also took the opportunity to try the house red. I was so impressed that I asked the Sommelier to come back and explain why it was so impressive. He explained that he felt there was no need for house wine to be sh*t. After travelling around Europe and experiencing the house wines there for many years, he felt it was important to bring something like that to Bacchus. And the result? A wine so good the wine house even put their brand on it! A Bacchus Shiraz, from the Barossa Valley made by Kaesler. Give it a try next time you’re there and let me know if you agree on the taste and the quality.

PS. Bacchus is the Queensland home of Dom Perignon, the champagne is offered by the glass! For this champagne and wine fiend, Bacchus is a VERY happy place to visit.

I hope to try one of their degustation menus one day too.

**While this dining experience was complimentary, this review is completely authentic and true. I have dined at Bacchus many times over the years and will continue to do so.

Aladdin Hits Brisbane – Genie Steals The Show

Aladdin ain’t nothin’ without Genie and Genie ain’t nothin’ without them eyebrows!

I managed to find tickets to Aladdin for opening night in Brisbane at QPAC, the day before! Pure luck.

Honestly, to start with it was just good. Then along came Genie! BAM!! Suddenly the whole room was excited and yelling. That man is an entertainer!! This sets the tone for the rest of the show. It’s fast paced, there’s always lots to take in and surprises around every corner. You’d think with such a well known Disney story it would be hard to throw those surprises in but it was very well executed.

The sets were on point! From creating the bustling and colourful markets to the luxurious palace and the city rooftop; the design, attention to detail and the transitioning of the sets was impressive. Genie’s cave (keep an eye out for the hidden ladies) and the scene when Aladdin takes Jasmine on the magic carpet for the first time (of course with ‘I can show you the world’ playing in the background) took the cake for me. Seriously. how do they make the magic carpet look that real?! Takes me right back to my childhood when I wished I had one to run off on adventures.

I loved how adult humor had been integrated throughout the performance and how the performers made fun of Brisbane (or Ipswich, rather) during the show. It made the show even more hilarious and engaging. All two and a half hours of it!

One of my favourite characters would have to be Lago, Jafar’s evil little sidekick. He was perfectly matched to the role, a sinister character with humorous lines and an excellent wardrobe. That outfit was definitely made just for him. On that note, all of the outfits are absolutely dazzling.

There was something missing though. Where was the pet tiger and monkey?! How hard could it be to have a live tiger and monkey on stage??

I highly recommend checking out the show while it’s in town. Tickets are on sale on the QPAC website until 6 May.

Oh! And, Bacchus has an incredible pre-theatre menu, blog coming soon on that too. Stand tuned.

Summer House Kangaroo Point – Ah-sigh-ee Delight

I have visited Summer House in Kangaroo Point a number of times recently for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s walking distance from my house and that’s always nice. Secondly, their menu rocks! Particularly the breakfast menu. And thirdly, their venue is an secluded, funky garden patio, covered with trees and quirky hidden flamingos! Oh, and they have live music. And tapas. Everyone loves tapas.

Anyway, this particularly occasion, I went there to try their Acai (ah-sigh-ee) bowl. I have been on an acai trail around Brisbane lately (and everywhere else I go if I’m honest) and this is one of the best I have had! Why? Well it was blended with strawberries. There’s little, delicious berries throughout the acai giving extra pops of flavour. Of course there’s the coconut yoghurt, the crunchy granola and the fresh berries too which all comes together to make a delightful little bowl of healthy goodness!

If you don’t feel like something quite so healthy (hello hangover, I’ve seen you round here before) then the breakfast burger is the go!! Spicy hollandaise, avocado, halloumi, fried egg, bacon, spinach & brioche bun – I can see you drooling. I smashed one a couple of weeks ago after a big night out. Def did the trick!!

Lupa Pizza Bar, Brisbane’s Newest Roman Pizza Spot

Lupa Pizza Bar has just opened in Brisbane’s West End on Montague Street and is soon to become a hit with the locals with their great wine list and roman style pizza!

My friends had done some research and were especially excited as Lupa has a dry Lambrusco on their wine list. This type of wine is apparently very hard to come by outside of Italy. We ordered the rose Lambrusco as well, but as soon as I tried it, the dry Lambrusco was the one for me! Paired perfectly with the cooler evening (side note – what is happening Brisbane?! So cold!) and the fresh pizzas.

After much menu deliberation (welcome to dining with us) we settled on sharing two pizzas, the Core de mamma (Fior di latte mozzarella, capocollo, roman artichokes, lemon) and the Scacciafiga (San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte mozzarella, onion, gorgonzola). However just as the waiter was walking away we decided we would try the special of the day, Italian meatballs – which just happened to be the last serving!

The meatballs were delicious. Six serves. I thought I would just have one but I couldn’t wait for the next one and then I even grabbed the beautiful and fresh bread to mop up the sauce!

While my two friends enjoyed the Core de mamma pizza the best with it’s lemon and artichokes creating a light but fresh flavour, I was a fan of the spicy Scacciafiga. The gorgonzola was like hitting jackpot whenever you reached it on the pizza – melt in your mouth and a great base – light and slightly charred of course.

The fit-out is simple and casual, the staff know the food and wine list with a great depth of knowledge of origins.
