Kimye comes to visit

I was lucky enough to have my best friend, Kim (or Pilly or Kimye) visit me for three hours while she was in transit from Perth to Wellington.

I don’t often have friends to visit from NZ  and I always get super excited to share my world.

People always presume that Brisbane is a big city-city. I think of it more as a town-city or a beachsideesque-city as it is a lot slower moving than the likes of Melbourne or Sydney.

You can still get parks in the city on the road during the day and traffic isn’t terrible most of the time. Needless to say, I want to share with people how beautiful the city is where I live. Especially when I’m trying to make them move over, right Kim… Kidding! I gave up on a few years ago now, although it would be nice.

Anyway, I gave Kim the three hour express whirlwind Brisbane tour! Straight to South Bank for a looksie, through the city, pitstop at Doughnut Time for a cookie dough  doughnut, New Shaghai to pick up dumplings to eat on the balcony, Kangaroo Point for views & then chugging wine (her not me, I had to drive) on my balcony before heading back to the airport. Yewww!

My fave pic is Kim with the wine bottle in her hand on the balcony, I half considered ‘accidentally’ making her miss her flight.

Come back soon, Kimye!

First day of the last year of my twenties. Shite.

Around my birthday I always take time to reflect on the year that has been for me and what I have achieved.

It’s been a big year. A huge year even, but really, when do I ever have a quiet one?! I’m not one for sitting around and watching the world go past me while I idly admire it.

I guess the biggest thing for me is that I am in a job I LOVE that I am still wanting to be in after 15 months. If you know me, you’ll have a fair assumption that I am a commitment phobe. I struggle with being tied down, avoid signing leases, romantic relationships, buying large ticket items/pets (anything that will keep me in one place) and even having a permanent role – until this one came around. Thank God it did though. I am more ‘settled’ than I have ever been with no plans of skipping cities or countries anytime soon. I love the culture and the people, my job is great and I even made it into LEAP (Leaders enhancement authenticity program) with 12 of my peers after an intense application period.

LEAP runs for a year, outside of work time and I was nominated Captain of my Team too by my peers. I can’t wait to see what I will be like on the other side.

I have also had immense opportunities for personal and leadership development. We were gifted the opportunity to explore more about ourselves, our behaviours, leadership styles etc. I am more comfortable and aware because of it. I even display my emotions now. Sometimes… haha.

The last thing I will say on the work front is that I also won the Wiley Young Gun award which was an awesome honour. I am proud of the results of my efforts.

Travel wise, I visited my one new country. Each year I try travel to at least one new country to keep up with my age. This year it was Mexico and it has fast skipped up the list to be in my top few fave countries. I can’t wait to go back. I also spent a lot of time in NZ and tripped around USA. I spent a week working from Vancouver, a city I love and miss living in. I spend a bit of time travelling domestically for work which allows me to catch up with my friends all around Australia. I want to spend more time exploring QLD this coming year, I always struggle to find the time.

I have been exercising more than ever before. Not really on purpose but I seem to have a crap load of energy and exercising is the best way to rid of some of it. I’ve started waking up stupid early (apparently a sign of getting old) too so suddenly I find myself with time in the morning to get active. I feel so good after being outside and stretching my muscles.

Relationships… haha I had a hilarious Tinder date, you can read about that here. Other than that, I have been on a number of dates with great guys but nothing worth mentioning. Although, the new Happn app is great. It’s like gourmet Tinder – if you’re single, get on it!

This year one of my biggest fears also slapped me front centre. My Dad was diagnosed with a deteriorating lung condition. There have been some not so nice days however the world is an amazing place and there are incredible medical advancements daily.

What else? Hmmm I moved back to where I love, Kangaroo Point. My dumpling addiction has come to an all-time high and I now crave beer like never before after visiting Mexico. I met some amazing people and let go of some that didn’t fit anymore. I volunteered time to a charity event (JDRF Sportsquiz, if you’re in Bris be there!) and loved it. I had my car written off and I bought a new one. I chopped off my forever long locks in exchange for a choppy bob. I attempted, and failed, to drink less alcohol.

Next year is already shaping up nicely! I guess I’ll tell you all about it in a year.

Happy Holidays

I’m running a bit behind with updates for my holidays!

I had the absolute best time in New Zealand for Christmas and New Years.

I spent the first five days at home in Feilding with my family and the cows. Christmas was a quiet affair until the evening when the neighbours joined and we got rowdy. Boxing Day we headed to the annual Palmerston North races which quickly escalated to a group of friends and I heading out for the night.

We rented an amazing house in Pauanui on the Coromandel Coast, where we have spent many holidays, for the next week. While Daniel (brother) flew out to Fiji to party it up on Beachcomber Island, my best mate Kim, my brother Luke’s mate Ben, myself, Luke and my parents headed north. We were met there by my Dad’s brother and his family and our family friends, the Davies and their family, including my beautiful Goddaughter. 16 of us in total!

When we are in Pauanui, life really revolves around only a few things: naps, champagne, the beach and food. Probably four of my favourite things!

The house was on a private airstrip with a hangar underneath and a balcony built for taking it all in. We watched the planes and helicopters flying all day long. The beach was only a few minutes walk away as was the tiny shopping centre.

We attempted fishing with no luck, not even a bite BUT! I did do the big walk up Mt Pauanui successfully on the morning of New Year’s Eve! It was tough towards the end but well worth the views.

I had such a good time that I actually balled my eyes out when I left. It’s pretty unusual for me to get upset when I fly out but I just didn’t want to leave. Lucky I got back and had a party that night and started work the day after so I had little time to dwell on anything!

Vietnamese Mint, Morningside

I’d heard it was some of the best pho in Brisbane so I had to check it out!

I had the beef pho, of course, and Jay had the lemongrass chicken salad.

Pho was delicious, a rich broth and all the usual fillings, beautiful in every way.

Jay’s salad was huge but she let me know it tasted great in between mouthfuls.

Unfortunately they were out of coconut juice so I just went with water

Best pho in Brisbane? Can’t say I’ve had enough back here yet to say yay or nay but I’d certainly go back any day!

Vietnamese Mint on Urbanspoon

What’s happening?!

Sooo a few thing have happened of late, hence my absence.

Firstly, I got a new job! Yay me! After looking for months it’s easily the one I wanted the most and I think suits me the most. Super excited to start on Monday.

Secondly, new job is in Brisbane – so I’m moving! Four days notice to move interstate is not easy. My luggage was supposed to be picked up on Monday and seeing as tomorrow is Thursday, I’m not holding my breath for a swift arrival.

Thirdly, yes four days! Seeing as I had a trip booked to go to the Justin Timberlake concert with my brothers in Auckland I decided to extend my trip and see my family in NZ before I start working full time again and have limited leave available.

Fourth, I’m in NZ. You may have gathered that from above but I’m at home and making the most of being with my family instead of telling you lot about my life. This leads me to why I’m blogging at nearly 1am in bed..

Further explanations to come soon 🙂

Late weekend recap

Seeing as it is nearly the weekend I figure I should update you on last weekend!

Friday was great. Dumplings with Annabelle and Sophie at a BYO then off to the Emerson. We ended up at the Veuve party which was absolutely packed. We met some cricket players in from… somewhere (maybe the UK?) and had some drinks with them before heading to Burger King for our ritual cheeseburgers then home!

Saturday was a bit of a write off. I cancelled my plans (sorry Allan) and stayed in to watch movies and catch up on sleep knowing I had a big day Sunday.

Sunday was massive! My friend was playing in the St Kilda (AFL) Legends game and I went along to support. It was hilarious. A bunch of ex players and club sponsors on the field makes a humorous mix – some can play, some can’t.

Next up we had the offical St Kilda function for during the game. Cue champagne, and my personal favourite, the half time party pies and scones mmm. After the game it was down to the rooms to watch the boys do their stretches then back up for drinks with the Sales crew.

We ended up back at the Crown Hotel Suites where Bryce had a room for some drinks then up to level 28 where they made us some delicious cocktails and we ordered burgers and oysters. Always a brilliant mix.

We tried to find somewhere to party and was talked into a new club at the Casino, Co I think it was called. It was a RnB club, not the usual Sunday session I’m used to and I tired pretty quickly so headed home by midnight.

Now to get ready for this weekend! Can’t wait for the Lions v Collingwood game at the MCG on Saturday. GO LIONS!!
