Weren’t you Rachael’s Crazy World Before?

Yup I certainly was Rachael’s Crazy World before! The blog had been around a while. I’ve grown up, it’s grown up and it was time for a bit of an image update. Plus I ran out of hosting space on my free WordPress account. That’s when Wander Wonder Wonton was born!

Why Wander Wonder Wonton? It’s really very simple. These words represent the three ways I love to spend my time. I travel, I think, I eat.

Wander: I love to travel. And explore. I wonder around alllll the time. Around my neighborhood, around my city of Brisbane, around Australia, around New Zealand and around the world.

Wonder: I am endlessly curious about the world. This curiosity leaves me constantly wandering about… well, everything!

Wonton: I love to eat. Like, so, sooo much. I am already thinking about what I will have or where I will go for lunch and dinner before I even have breakfast. I love breaking bread and sharing a meal with company.

This blog originated as a space I could document and share my travels on my first trip to the USA. Back then it wasn’t easy to get a phone plan or data so I would write my blogs and post them at night or when I found wifi so I could remember my adventures and my parents could see what I was up to. But guess what?! They never bloody read it! Hilarious.

Most of all, I like having a space where I can keep memoirs of my life, my travel adventures, what I eat and share them with you guys. I don’t mind if nobody even reads my blogs, but I’m grateful if you do! Thank you for sharing my world with me.

Shout out to my housemate, Developer Dave, who helped me with the changes!

What do you think of the new name and layout for Wander Wonder Wonton?
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Nobu Express Lunch – Crown Melbourne

Ahhh $50 bento box with all of the beautiful things in it AND a glass of shiraz? I think yes.

We tried the Nobu signature bento box which included…

 Sashimi Salad with Matsuhisa Dressing
Chef’s Selection of Assorted Sushi
Seafood Ceviche
Black Cod Miso
Baby Tiger Prawns with Creamy Spicy
Sautéed Seasonal Vegetables with Spicy Garlic Sauce
Rice and Miso Soup

If I was to pick a favorite item… it would be the ceviche. Close tie with the spicy tuna sushi though. All the components were absolutely delicious.

We were seated quickly, order taken quickly, meals were delivered quickly… it’s a great option for a quick and beautiful Japanese seafood lunch in Melbourne. Particularly if you’re running in and out of a conference at Crown!

Excellent food, poor service at Hippopotamus, Wellington

Having dined at Hippopotamus at QT Hotel (formerly Art Museum) with wonderful past experiences, it was disappointing to see such a decline in the service.
If this was a review purely on food, the restaurant would still sit very high in my books, however service accounts for much of the experience and they really let themselves down.

It was almost as if our table was just forgotten consistently. By the sommelier, the waitresses, the bar staff, the host. Other tables come and left while we were there over three hours.

They started off well. We were seated, poured water and drink orders taken. It took a while to get menus but they came eventually and followed closely by the amuse bouche. That was the end of the fast service, and the water filling now that I think of it.

With the help of the sommelier I had chosen an Italian red. They boast an extensive and international wine list, but only if you are buying by the bottle.

The amuse bouche was delightful, although I could not tell you what it was with the beautiful, thick French accents most of the staff have. It was salmon with poppy seeds and… a sauce, served with a sweet drink of cranberry and… other berries? It was fresh and light, a perfect start. Dad especially praised it to the wait staff to pass compliments to the Chef.

After asking for my water to be refilled three times with and without luck, I found the bottle and poured my own for the rest of the evening. At one stage the barman noticed I had tried to ask a waitress and she hadn’t heard so he came over to help. Great initiative but that was the end of it.

The bread took a long time to arrive (we thought they had forgotten), as did our entrees.

I had the King Ora salmon sashimi with soy jelly, wrapped in cucumber with wakame on top. Absolutely beautiful. The salmon melted in your mouth and the accompaniments went beautifully. Dad passed over two of his Bluff oysters, they were served shucked with the choice of a red or white wine dipping sauce. One oyster was questionable, the sauces had a nice tang to them.

We had another very long break while waiting for our mains. I chose the lamb rump and it was served perfectly rare. The eggplant was also lovely.

Earlier in the evening, Dad had enquired about what an item featured in one of the mains was, PicoPico (fern), and that he was interested in trying it. When his plate came out he couldn’t find the item on there, and asked the staff to point it out (it’s beautifully presented but you can’t tell what everything is) for him. The wait staff sheepishly came back over and explained it had been the most popular dish of the night and they had run out of the Pico Pico before he ordered. Considering this was why he had ordered that particular main and already enquired about that item, it was shocking to hear. Particularly as they hadn’t owned up to it earlier and wouldn’t have if it wasn’t questioned.

While we were at the table I had misplaced two rings. We were openly searching for them, with flashlights under the table and the staff came over during this time but never once asked if we needed help. I asked the barman to check downstairs which he said he would do immediately but then never came back to me.

I ordered the cheese for my dessert and the French cheeses were wonderful, as were the fig and pear that came with them. The sommelier helped my brother choose a limoncello to go with his dessert, the panna cotta, which although beautiful to look at, was unfortunately quite bland.

As you can imagine, with the four of us enjoying three courses each and multiple beverages, the bill was considerate. No words of condolances were expressed over the main muck up nor the long waits. In a place renowned for fine dining and where I have had many excellent experiences before, it was highly disappointing to have such poor service and I won’t be visiting again for some time. I hope it was just a one off.

Did you say truffle mac ‘n’ cheese jaffles Project 41?!

Yeah they did.

Truffle. Mac. Cheese. Jaffles.
Get. In. My. Belly!!!!

As soon as I head Project 41 Cafe in Bowen Hills put these on the menu I was there. Day One Baby. I’m practically a trend setter.

They came over, piping hot. That heavenly truffle puree, cheese and bread scentI’m wafting around. Hell yes. I devoured them. Every last crumb. Happiness filled my soul from my stomach out.

My pics didn’t do these slices of heaven justice so I stole one from their Facebook. Sorry (not sorry) about the copyright issues.

Go there. Try them. Thank me. You’re welcome.

Muharam Cafe, Hawthorn

Lisa took me to a place she normally just stops for coffee in for brunch.

Muharam Cafe is another casual, funky cafe nestled in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn.

I ordered a apple and orange juice (it was all they had for fresh) which was a nice, refreshing start but nothing too exciting.

We both went for The Stack breakfast. A potato rosti, stacked with spinach, smoked salmon, another rosti, a poached egg and apparently truffle oil. Why apparently? Well we couldn’t taste it. Must have been the tiniest of dashes.

All was well to start with (apart from the lack of truffle oil) and it wasn’t until half way through that I realised just how oily the rosti was.

We settled the bill and on the walk home both felt quite ill due to all the additional oil that was now resting in out stomachs.

The Vietnamese, Fortitude Valley

Hungover? Pho is the answer.

Actually it’s the answer to most things if you’re asking my opinion.

I dragged my Flatty, David to The Vietnamese in Fortitude Valley to fulfill my pho craving for lunch today.

Pho is like the ultimate comfort food. It warms you up, makes you feel happy and content.

We sat down and I ordered without even opening the menu – the food came out pretty quickly, hot and delicious.

Beautiful broth and tender rare beef (so often it is overlooked elsewhere) – it made me so happy. I, of course, ate too much though and could have practically rolled home. Instead I settled for a 2 hour nap. Perfect!

I had tried to visit The Vietnamese on Friday night but the staff advised me it would be a better idea to come in another time as there was an hour wait in the kitchen – I was thankful for their transparency.

The atmosphere and interior may not be much but the quality of the food is high and the prices cheap. New local pho spot pho (pronounced fur) sure! See what I did there?!
